Sleepover Show #26: Sarah Jaffe

When we found out that Sarah Jaffe would be coming to town, we immediately asked her to come along for a Sleepover Show.  After first hearing the Texas native’s debut album, Suburban Nature over the summer, we knew she’d be a perfect fit for what we do.  We had the opportunity to spend some time with her and her band before a show at T.T. the Bear’s in Cambridge, and they played some great music for us.  There is a reason why this songstress has been getting great press over the last few months, as she’s crisscrossed the country enchanting crowds.  There is pain to be heard in her voice, but also great clarity.   After her sound check, we moved into the green room to get some songs of our own.

For some reason, the green room of T.T.’s is purple and filled with old wooden chairs.  No matter–we cleared the spaces around us, getting Sarah and her band mates Scott Danbom and Robert Gomez up on a ledge, and started rolling.

First up, Sarah played A Sucker for Your Marketing, an unreleased tune that will hopefully find its way onto a record soon.  It is too bad that the song is not on her album, but we hope the video gives you another reason to anticipate her next release.

Then, a stunning version of Robyn’s Hang with Me, completely redefining the song and making it her own.

And finally, the song we first heard from Sarah, Clementine.  Sometimes the darkness of the back room of a Boston club can be the perfect setting for a song of loss.  Sitting all alone in the darkened corner, her eyes falling in and out of the light, she simply wowed us with this last song.  Though she’s not on the road at the moment, do yourself a favor and head over to her site and pick up the album–you won’t regret it.
